Double Glazed
Windows
UPVC double glazed windows are made
by having a UPVC frame and double glazed glass. Double glazed
units are made from a sandwich of two panes of glass held
together by a spacer bar and sealed at the edges. In between
the two panes of glass will either be air or if you pay
slightly more there will be argon or krypton gas, this gas,
whilst more expensive will provide more insulation for your
windows.
An ideal
solution between the two panes of glass would be to create a
vacuum, this would create an ideal solution for insulation but
it is problematic and therefore some manufacturers will part
vacuum between the panes and the fill the remainder with a
gas.
It is
not only the double glazed units which can have an effect on
the insulation provided, along with the glass the frames also
make a difference, aluminium frames are not a very good
insulator as metal will conduct the heat and allow it to pass
through. Wood is a good insulator and this will provide
adequate insulation as will convenient UPVC or
vinyl.
You can
reap financial rewards by changing your windows to double
glazed, for one the heating bills should be reduced as less
heat is passed out through the window, also, if you install
UPVC double glazed windows to your property these can often add
value to your property not to mention look
great.
Other
benefits to double glazed windows are the fact
that you have greater sound insulation resulting in less
annoying noise such as traffic entering your home, also the
security is higher as these units are normally harder to break
through than a single glazed window.
When
buying UPVC windows you will want to get a number of
double glazing prices to ensure that
you don't pay over the top and that you get a decent firm to
fit them for you. You can do this easily by using the a simple
quoting form into which you enter your details just once and
then several companies contact you based upon the detials you
have entered.
Double glazed windows are virtually maintenance free and do
not require painting but that is not to say that they will last
forever, they will last a very long time but sometimes things
will happen. One common problem with double glazed units is the
fact that they can break down and leak and let moisture in
between the two panes of glass. This can lead to ugly stains in
between the two panes which you cannot clean. There are two
solutions to this, the traditional solution was to just get a
new unit made, it?s fairly reasonable in cost and changing a
double glazed unit is usually quite straight forward. Recently
a new method has arrived which involves drilling holes in the
glass and pouring chemical in between the two panes to clean
the stains, after this breathable caps are put into the holes
with the idea being that any further moisture will exit via
these holes.
